Michael Rubin, CEO of Fanatics, recently appeared on the Bill Simmons podcast, discussing the company's expansion into the collectibles sector. Since the acquisition of Topps and the establishment of Fanatics Collectibles nearly two years ago, Rubin expressed immense enjoyment in this venture but also acknowledged the need for further improvements.
One of the key initiatives under Rubin's leadership has been the Topps MVP Buyback program. This innovative program encourages business in hobby shops by offering store credit to collectors in exchange for Topps Chrome cards featuring current MVPs. Rubin's personal connections with players and league executives have been instrumental in facilitating rapid advancements and initiatives for Fanatics/Topps.
Rubin recounted the development of the MLB Debut patch program, an idea from Mike Mahan, head of Fanatics Collectibles. This program, which incorporates game-used patches from a rookie's first MLB uniform, was quickly actualized following Rubin's discussions with MLBPA President Tony Clark and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred about a year ago.
Upon acquiring Topps, Rubin admitted to not fully understanding certain aspects of the trading card industry, such as redemption cards. However, he took feedback from collectors and hobby businesses seriously, leading to a significant reduction in redemption cards by 75-80 percent. This improvement was achieved by working closely with players to ensure signed cards were readily available for inclusion in packs.
Addressing concerns about the fairness of card distribution, particularly regarding breakers receiving allegedly "loaded" boxes, Rubin mentioned that Fanatics has engaged an independent auditor to oversee the packaging and distribution process of the company's cards.
Rubin also spoke about expanding the team at Topps. "We've doubled the team at Topps since we bought the company," he stated, emphasizing the importance of growth and development within the company. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance the brand and its offerings.
Topps is also reimagining the launch of its popular products, turning them into significant events that attract public attention and media coverage. Rubin compared this approach to Nike, noting that constant innovation is essential to keep the business thriving and relevant.
Looking ahead, Rubin teased the upcoming major launch of the 2023 Bowman Draft, scheduled for release on December 12. This release is particularly noteworthy due to Fanatics' endorsement deal with Tom Brady, a close friend of Rubin and a former Montreal Expos draft pick. Rubin hinted at exciting Brady cards in this release, adding a unique twist to the annual launch. This approach exemplifies Rubin's vision for Fanatics and Topps: to continuously innovate and create exciting, fresh experiences for collectors and fans alike.
