A sealed box of the original 1967 Wacky Packages has just sold for an astonishing $79,300 at Heritage Auctions, setting a new high-water mark for the quirky parody sticker series created by Topps. The sale shattered the previous record of $63,084, which was set in 2022.

Wacky Packages, dreamed up by Topps in 1967, featured cartoon-style parodies of everyday consumer products—turning household names into tongue-in-cheek collectibles that quickly became a childhood favorite. Topps brought in a young Art Spiegelman, who would later gain fame as the creator of Maus, to help bring the series to life with his playful and irreverent illustrations.

The very first run of Wacky Packages included punch-out cards designed to be licked and stuck wherever kids pleased. The concept, however, ruffled some corporate feathers. Brands like Ritz Crackers (“Ratz Crackers”), Jolly Green Giant (“Jolly Mean Giant”), Morton Salt (“Moron Salt”), and 7-Up (“6-Up”) weren’t amused, and legal threats led Topps to swap out 12 of the original 44 cards, expanding the set to 56 in the process.

As Topps gained confidence in its legal right to parody, the company introduced “Wacky Ads” in 1969 and relaunched the sticker series in 1973, this time with peel-and-stick backs. The series became a playground staple and, for a time, rivaled even baseball cards in popularity. Although the brand went on hiatus from 1992 to 2004, Wacky Packages has enjoyed a steady presence ever since, continuing to attract nostalgia-driven collectors and new fans alike.

This latest auction result not only highlights the staying power of Topps’ offbeat creation but also cements the 1967 Wacky Packages as a must-have for serious collectors of vintage non-sports cards.
