Heritage Auctions is spotlighting a piece of NBA history in its "Treasures from Planet Hollywood" sale, offering a full Lakers uniform worn by Shaquille O'Neal from the 1996-97 season. This uniform is not just any piece of memorabilia; it's been photo-matched to the very first game of Kobe Bryant's NBA career on November 3, 1996, marking the beginning of one of the most iconic duos in basketball history.

The auction is part of a larger event that includes over 1,600 items, such as props and costumes from Planet Hollywood's international collection.

O'Neal, having signed a monumental seven-year, $121 million contract with the Lakers after leaving the Orlando Magic, expressed a desire to focus on the game and his major sponsorships rather than financial discussions. This uniform heralds from the early days of his tenure with the Lakers, a period that would eventually see the team secure three consecutive NBA championships from 2000 to 2002, with O'Neal being named Finals MVP in each of those victories.

The uniform, comprising a size 56 jersey and size 50 shorts to accommodate O'Neal's 7'1" stature, shows significant game wear, including loose threading on the numbers, attesting to its authentic use in the heat of NBA action. Heritage Auctions confirms that this uniform has been worn in at least five other games during the season, all resulting in notable performances from O'Neal.

As bidding heats up, reaching near the $100,000 mark, collectors have the opportunity to own a significant piece of Lakers and NBA history. The auction is set to conclude with a live finale on Saturday, promising a thrilling end to the sale of this remarkable uniform, directly obtained from the Lakers.
