A longtime collector's son recently discovered an extraordinary collection of 1920s vintage baseball cards, featuring legends like Babe Ruth and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, in a 100-year-old tobacco tin. Assembled by Ed, a purchasing agent from Northern California and a devoted baseball fan, the collection is set to be auctioned by Auction Monthly. The collection, which includes cards of the 1919 “Black Sox” and other Baseball Hall of Famers, has been meticulously preserved by Ed's family, who valued preserving items from the past. The cards, not in gem-mint condition but still highly valuable, include rare finds like the 1919-21 W514 “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and multiple Babe Ruth cards from various series. Auction Monthly's vice president Brandon highlighted the rarity and excitement of this find, with an initial estimate for the collection in the high six figures. Ed's son has decided to auction most of the collection while keeping a few cards and Ed's baseball glove as mementos.

This remarkable collection, filled with historical treasures, includes not only Babe Ruth and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson cards but also nearly every player from the infamous 1919 “Black Sox” team. The variety of cards spans several series, such as the 1921 E220 National Caramel Babe Ruth, 1922 American Caramel E121 Babe Ruth, and Ty Cobb cards from the same era. Despite their lower grade, the cards are highly prized for their historical value and rarity, with some expected to sell for thousands of dollars. This collection, a testament to a bygone era of baseball, is a dream discovery for collectors and enthusiasts alike. With about 80 of the cards to be graded, Auction Monthly anticipates significant interest in the first quarter of 2024. As Ed’s son begins the process of downsizing, this auction presents a unique opportunity for collectors to own a piece of baseball history, encapsulating the spirit and memories of a fan's lifelong passion for the game.
