A historic Washington Senators jersey worn by Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson over a century ago is set to be the highlight of Heritage Auctions' Spring catalog. This rare grey flannel jersey, one of only two known to exist, links back to Johnson's teammate Eric “Swat” Erickson and has been preserved in its original condition.
One of baseball's legendary items, a Walter Johnson jersey dating back to his playing days with the Washington Senators from 1919 to 1922, will soon be auctioned. Initially introduced to the collectors' market 18 years ago, this jersey was previously owned by Johnson's teammate, Eric "Swat" Erickson, and comes directly from his personal collection. Johnson, known for his impressive career achievements, including 3,508 strikeouts and 110 shutouts, is a celebrated figure in baseball history. The authenticity and historical value of the jersey are highlighted by its A10 rating from MEARS and a letter from authenticator Dave Grob, despite showing signs of rust from storage. This piece of sports history, last sold for $352,000 in 2006, is anticipated to fetch over $3 million in the upcoming auction, making it a potentially record-setting sale.
