A pair of home white Chicago Bulls shorts, famously worn by Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals, are expected to fetch significant sums when they go up for auction this fall at SCP Auctions. Jordan, widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, wore these shorts during his final season with the Bulls, a season that culminated in his sixth NBA championship.
The 1998 NBA Finals marked the end of Jordan’s storied career with the Bulls (though he would later return for two seasons with the Washington Wizards). The Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz 4-2 in the series, securing their sixth title since 1991. Jordan played a pivotal role throughout the Finals, and these home white shorts, worn during Games 3, 4, and 5 at the United Center in Chicago, carry the weight of that historic achievement.
The shorts, which will be part of SCP’s Fall Premier Auction, are photo-matched to the three games in Chicago by both MeiGray and Sports Investors. In those games, Jordan scored 24, 34, and 28 points, respectively, helping the Bulls win Games 3 and 4 before losing Game 5. The Bulls would go on to win the series in Game 6 in Utah, making these shorts the last home trunks Jordan ever wore as a member of the Chicago Bulls.
Bidding for the shorts opens on November 6 and runs through November 23. With a pre-auction estimate of $500,000, the shorts are poised to set a record for game-worn basketball shorts, according to SCP Auctions.
Jordan’s game-worn memorabilia has a long history of commanding high prices. In 2022, a game-worn jersey from Game 1 of the same Finals sold for $10 million at Sotheby’s, setting a record for basketball memorabilia. Earlier this year, a collection of six sneakers Jordan wore during the 1998 NBA Finals fetched $8 million at auction.
As one of the final pieces of Jordan's historic tenure with the Chicago Bulls, these shorts are expected to draw heavy interest from collectors and fans alike, adding yet another chapter to the legend of "His Airness" and his iconic run in the NBA.
