In a groundbreaking venture, former Major League Baseball player turned artist, Micah Johnson, has proudly created the first-ever Topps Negro Leagues Baseball Card Set. This significant project honors the Black ballplayers who paved the way for future generations and holds personal resonance for Johnson, marking one of his proudest achievements.

The unveiling of this historic set, dubbed the "Road to Rickwood," began in Kansas City with the release of the Satchel Paige card. This event marks the beginning of a series where a new card will be introduced each week leading up to the Rickwood Classic. Additionally, a colossal 24-foot tall replica of each card will be displayed at various MLB ballparks across the country, celebrating the legacy and contributions of Negro Leagues players.

The highlight of this celebration will be at Rickwood Field on June 20, 2024, during a special regular-season MLB game. Rickwood Field, known as the oldest professional ballpark in the United States, once served as the home ground for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. In tribute, Topps has launched this special trading card collection, featuring artwork that captures the essence and impact of these legendary players.

About the Artist: Micah Johnson, whose transition from MLB player to artist has been marked by a commitment to inspire and empower, has used his artistic talents to bring the stories of Negro League icons to life. Each card in the collection showcases Johnson's hand-drawn artwork, providing a modern homage to the historical figures of baseball.

Collectible Card Details: The collection is not just a visual treat but also a collector's delight with several limited-edition variants. Each print run includes randomly inserted base card parallels, adding an element of surprise and exclusivity for collectors. Fans can look out for the numbered parallel cards, which include:

  • Silver Border (/99)
  • Blue Border (/49)
  • Purple Border (/25)
  • Red Border (/10)
  • Orange Border (/5)
  • Gold Border (/1)

These cards are additional to the base card included in any order, making each purchase a potentially unique acquisition.

With new releases scheduled every Thursday through June 20th, collectors and baseball enthusiasts have a regular appointment to acquire a piece of art and history. Through this series, Micah Johnson not only celebrates the rich history of the Negro Leagues but also provides a lasting legacy that encourages others to dream without limits.
