Robert Edward Auctions recently wrapped up its Spring Catalog Auction, achieving a monumental total of over $15.4 million in sales. This auction saw a record-setting participation, with more than 91,200 bids placed by the highest number of bidders ever recorded in one of REA’s events. Notably, 16 items each exceeded the $100,000 mark in bids.
The auction was led by a standout sale of a 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron card, graded PSA 9, which garnered $420,000. Although this price did not surpass previous records for an Aaron rookie card, another card of Aaron from 1971 Topps, one of only four graded PSA 10, set a new benchmark by fetching $210,000.
Among the significant sales was Derek Jeter’s 1993 Upper Deck SP rookie card, one of only 21 known examples, which brought in $312,000. Another rare card, a T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait with Red Background from 1909-1911, graded PSA 2.5 and featuring a rare Broad Leaf 350 back, sold for $270,000.
A freshly consigned 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle rookie card, which received a PSA 2 grade for the card and a 9 for the autograph, achieved $204,000 at auction.
Reflecting a renewed interest in collecting complete sets, the auction showcased several high-grade sets. A notable sale was the fourth-ranked 1969-70 Topps Basketball set, with a GPA of 8.77, which soared to $336,000. The sixth highest-ranked 1969 Topps Baseball set, with a GPA of 8.98, reached $216,000, while a fully graded set of 1962 Topps with 32 variations sold for $108,000. Additionally, a 1956 Topps set featuring an SGC 8 Mickey Mantle card fetched $75,000.
One of the most unique items auctioned was a pair of Nike Air Ship sneakers, signed and worn by Michael Jordan during his 1984 rookie season with the Chicago Bulls, which sold for $282,000.
Other notable items included a circa 1913 Joe Jackson photograph by Charles Conlon, which fetched $192,000, and a circa 1920 Babe Ruth single-signed baseball graded PSA/DNA NM/MT+ 8.5, which sold for $180,000. Also, a signed 1933 R319 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig card achieved $180,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card graded PSA 10 brought in $168,000.
REA's President, Brian Dwyer, commented on the diverse interest and engagement across various collectibles, from vintage cards and memorabilia to original photography and unopened boxes, which he noted as indicative of the overall health and vibrancy of the collectibles industry.
Looking ahead, REA has announced its upcoming May Encore Auction, which is scheduled to run from May 9 through May 19, promising another exciting event for collectors and enthusiasts.
