James Spence Authentication, established by renowned autograph collector James Spence, Jr. in 2005, has emerged as a pivotal player in the autograph authentication arena, certifying millions of signatures and constructing the world’s most extensive autograph database, comprising nearly one million images.
Following the acquisition, James Spence alongside James Spence III will maintain leadership roles within JSA. Additionally, Mark Pepitone, co-owner of JSA, will contribute as a senior advisor. This move is set to enhance JSA’s offerings, introducing new services such as grading and encapsulation to its repertoire.
Steven R. Eichenbaum, CEO of Certified Collectibles Group, highlighted the synergy between CCG and JSA, emphasizing their shared dedication to the collectibles industry and commitment to providing expert and reliable services. He expressed enthusiasm for the merger, anticipating the benefits it will bring to the collector community.
The acquisition follows Certified Collectibles Group's acquisition by Blackstone in 2021, responding to collector demands for a comprehensive service encompassing authentication, grading, and encapsulation. Previously, CCG's services included witnessed authentication through its Signature Series but lacked a full authentication and grading service for autographs. The inclusion of JSA is poised to fill this gap, offering an expanded suite of services.
CCG cited JSA’s esteemed standing within the sports collectibles community as a key motivator for the acquisition, aiming to enhance its offerings in the sports, autographs, and memorabilia sectors with JSA’s added expertise and expanded presence at shows.
Starting in April, collectors will have the convenience of using a single online submission form for both JSA’s autograph authentication and CGC’s grading and encapsulation services. Additional updates and service expansions are expected to be announced in the near future.
In a joint statement, Spence and Pepitone described the acquisition as an exciting new chapter for JSA, aligning with CCG’s vision and objectives. They look forward to leveraging CCG’s resources and experience to elevate the autograph authentication and collecting experience.
While JSA and CCG will operate independently in the immediate term, efforts are underway to integrate their services, promising a streamlined and enhanced experience for collectors and dealers alike.
