2024-25 Panini Obsidian Basketball: Where Neon Heat Meets Black Ice

Obsidian is back on the hardwood for another season, and the 2024-25 edition once again leans hard into what makes this product unique. Sleek, etched card stock, flashy parallels, and just enough chaotic energy to make every rip feel like you're playing with fire.

This is the seventh time Panini has dropped Obsidian on the basketball world, and it’s still one of the sharpest-looking chromium sets around. The design is moody and dark, the parallels are neon-bright, and the hits feel bold straight out of the pack.

What You’ll Find in a Hobby Box

Each box is a one-pack punch, holding seven cards total. Inside that, you're getting:

  • Two autographs

  • One memorabilia card

  • Three cards that are either inserts or parallels

  • One base card

It’s a fast break kind of rip — no fluff, just action.

Base and Parallels

The base set hasn’t had its full checklist revealed yet, but as usual with Obsidian, it’s not just about the players, it’s about the way the light bounces off the card. The etching is strong, the foil pops, and the parallels bring the drama.

This year introduces a few new parallel types to chase:

  • Electric Etch Pink Flood, numbered to 49

  • Electric Etch Blue Flood, numbered to 30

  • Electric Etch Hot Springs, numbered to 15

  • Electric Etch Caldera, which has yet to reveal its print run

These join the usual rainbow of obsidian-themed parallels, stretching all the way down to the elusive one-of-one versions.

Autograph Sets

Obsidian doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel with its auto lineup — it brings back the greatest hits while slipping in a few new looks. Collectors can expect returning themes like:

  • Rookie Jersey Autographs

  • Matrix Material Autos

  • Rookie Eruption Signatures

  • Magmatic Signatures

  • Galaxy Ink

  • Volcanic Signatures

  • Twilight Signatures

  • Rookie Jersey Ink

A new autograph series called Scorched Signatures is also making its debut. True to the name, the design uses a flaming motif to bring some serious heat to the checklist.

Memorabilia Cards

Cutting Edge memorabilia cards are back in rotation this year, keeping things sharp and dramatic with bold design and good swatch size. These are generally paired with rookies or veteran stars and round out the hit count nicely.

Inserts That Aren’t Just Filler

Obsidian’s insert game continues to lean into weird and wild visuals, with returning names that are anything but standard:

  • Equinox

  • Orbital

  • Hotspot

  • Supernova

There’s also a new set this year called Atomic Initials, which lays the player’s initials over an action photo — a cool twist that adds something fresh to the mix.

On the rare side, Obsidian is known for throwing in some seriously tough short print inserts. Two SSP cards from last year are back:

  • Volcanix

  • Black Color Blast

And new for 2024-25, there’s a third SSP called Vitreous. It’s a die-cut card that should appeal to anyone who likes their inserts with a little more edge — literally.

Obsidian remains one of the boldest looking products on Panini’s calendar. It’s not about stuffing boxes with dozens of commons. Whether you're after low-numbered ink, fiery parallels, or rare die-cut chase cards, this set has plenty of ways to deliver a good pull.
